As a filmmaker, Louis is best known for his cult classic Blaxploitation spoof, "Pootie Tang," which he wrote and directed. Louis' first feature film, "Tomorrow Night," an independent film that he produced, wrote and directed, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998. Louis' most successful short film, "Ice Cream," screened at Sundance and the "New Directors, New Films" series at MOMA in 1994. "Ice Cream" went on to be sold in several foreign television markets and can still be seen on Bravo.
Louis will star in the new Ricky Gervais film, "The Invention of Lying," alongside Jennifer Garner and Rob Lowe, and he will have a recurring role in the NBC series "Parks and Recreation." In 2008, Louis was seen in "Diminished Capacity" with Matthew Broderick, Virginia Madsen and Alan Alda and "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" with Martin Lawrence, Mike Epps and Cedric the Entertainer.
