Bill Cosby

While tending bar to help finance his education, Bill Cosby found that his joking with the customers was consistently met with the suggestion that he try stand-up. It was during his nightclub circuit period that comedy writer Carl Reiner caugh his act in Pittsburgh and introduced him to star in the "I Spy" series. The series, about two spies disguised as tennis bums, was an instant smash. Cosby won numerous Emmys.

In 1972, Cosby created a Hanna-Barbera cartoon based on many of high school buddies entitled "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids." While the show was humorous, it also underscored Cosby's dedication to education. Cosby himself later received a doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts.

In 1984, Cosby broke new ground by producing a sitcom about a middle class white-collar black family. "The Cosby Show" was an instant success for its network NBC. Its high ratings also spawned a spin-off "A Different World" in 1987
